NON-SCHOOL VEHICLE TRANSPORTATION
FOR SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES/FIELD TRIPS
In the event that school vehicles are not available and parents and or volunteers transport
students to out-of-district activities, the Anamosa Community School District’s insurance carrier
does not provide primary coverage for the owner, driver, or passengers even though the activity
is sponsored by the school district.
A School Activity/Field Trip Permission Form and License and Liability Insurance Agreement
Form, example below, should be completed by parents and/or drivers.

cars/vans driven by the parents or volunteers of students in your child’s school. It is important to
understand that the Anamosa Community School District’s insurance carrier does not provide
primary coverage for the owner, driver, or passengers during an activity/field trip in non-school
vehicles even though the activity is sponsored by the school district.

License and Liability Insurance Agreement
When school parents/volunteers are driving their personal vehicle for an authorized school
activity/field trip, the driver is legally responsible for his/her own liability (bodily injury to
others and damage to other’s property) to the limit of the volunteer’s liability insurance
coverage.
The district is legally responsible for that part of liability claims (body injury to others and
damage to other’s property) in excess of the parent’s/volunteer’s liability insurance coverage but
only if the parent/volunteer is operating the vehicle under the direction of and within the scope of
their duties that have been authorized by school staff.
Parent/volunteer drivers using their own personal vehicle are required to have a current valid
Iowa driver’s license and automobile liability insurance on the volunteer’s personal vehicle used
for the school activity.
