One of our seniors, Maddy Fischer, was recently awarded as one of the Herbert Hoover Uncommon Student Award winners! Maddy was awarded a $11,500 scholarship for her project ‘Can You See Yourself in STEM?’ Maddy went through an intense application and interview process and created a project that she describes below:
‘Can You See Yourself in STEM?’ is a hands-on learning program that seeks to inspire confidence and curiosity in K-8 students so that they can pursue a career in STEM. The project was born out of my own experiences struggling to find representation for myself in STEM and my desire to create change in my community. I’ve currently taught my program to over 100 K-8 students in Jones County and I hope that number will continue to grow as I implement my program in more schools. Because, after all, if you can’t see it, you can’t be it
