Re: Passenger Restraints on School Buses
Recently, the Iowa Legislature and The Iowa State Board of Education adopted new rules that require all school buses purchased after October 2, 2019, be equipped with passenger restraints/seat belts. The Iowa Association of School Boards has since come out with a basic policy that guides the use of seat belts by those riding a school bus equipped with passenger restraints/seat belts. This policy was adopted by the Anamosa Community School District Board of Education on October 21, 2019. The policy, listed below, is quite simple and straightforward.
Policy 0702.13: School Bus Passenger Restraint
The district shall utilize three-point lap-shoulder belts on district school buses as required by state law. All three-point lap-shoulder belts available on district buses will be used by passengers when the vehicle is in any non-stationary gear.
Legal Reference: 281 I.A.C. 43.10(6)
The school district tries to purchase a new school bus each year to help maintain the condition of our fleet. This year is no different and our new bus will be arriving in the next couple of weeks.
This bus will be put into service on a regular bus route and may also be used for activity/athletic trips. It is equipped with seat belts, and the expectation of the Anamosa Community School District is that all passengers will follow the above school policy.
We would like to thank everyone in advance for your cooperation as we put this new safety feature into use. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact the District office or Bus Garage.
